We hope that this finds you all safe and healthy. What unprecedented times we find ourselves in. We are incredibly proud of all the hard work our NV Rides’ partners are doing throughout Northern Virginia. Although the landscape has changed, our partners have been able to pivot in order to continue to meet the needs of seniors in our community. By leveraging our partnerships, we have successfully worked together to meet the demand.

We are proud to say that we have been able to find rides with partners, or through subsidized county programs, to help fulfill all requests. We are truly all in this together, and we could not be more thankful or appreciative to everyone who has gone above and beyond to help make that happen.

As we enter Older American’s Month in May, we want to celebrate and thank everyone who is making a difference. Check out our new video connecting the social isolation that we are experiencing for the first time with what many older adults contend with every day.

Partner Highlights
|
This winter, HVN embarked on a new endeavor to deliver nonperishable food items for the residents at Harbor House, a local senior living facility, to help keep them strong and healthy during the quarantine. They have also increased their “friendly caller” program to check in on their members who are home alone during this time. We are also thankful that HVN drivers have been able to “hop” next door and pickup riders in Reston who are in need, since our RCC Rides program is currently not operational. Great job HVN!

The popular adult education program Adventures in Learning has moved online. AIL, which used to convene in person, has now gone virtual. Many of their clients have opted to join the class via Zoom, and together they are continuing to explore a variety of topics in a rich and stimulating intellectual environment. SCOVRH has also started grocery delivery to seniors who do not feel comfortable going out to the store during these uncertain times. The organization has generously covered the costs for those in need by purchasing essential items with grocery gift cards. Thank you for digging deep to help all who need it!

SCAS has been hard at work, meeting the needs of the community. They continue to offer medical rides and have greatly enhanced their friendly caller program so that they can ensure the health and safety of their members. Additionally, they are helping members shop, and even assisting them with setting up grocery delivery with programs such as InstaCart. They continue to support their local food pantry - Annandale Christian Community for Action (ACCA) by encouraging donations and helping their members connect to them for food distribution. SCAS has also helped get food and pharmacy deliveries to some community members in need. Outstanding work by incredible people!

LVC continues to serve their care receivers throughout the county, with medical transportation, food delivery and volunteer helpers doing general work around the home (all outside now during the pandemic). They have successfully recruited many new volunteers who are now all working from home, who they hope will remain on the rolls for many years to come. Through strong partnerships throughout Loudoun County, these superstar volunteers are making a huge difference. Keep up the good work!

Prior to the pandemic, SCWFC already had a close working relationship with Western Fairfax Christian Ministries, the food pantry in their neighborhood. SCWFC volunteer drivers would bring their clients to the pantry for their monthly shopping visits. As the stay at home orders were put in place SCWFC drivers have shifted how they operate. They now pickup grab and go bags for their clients and deliver the food to their doorstep. This helps to keep the vulnerable clients safe, but still allow them to access their grocery supplies. Kudos to SCWFC for continuing to safely serve all who need support!

SCMAFC dedicated drivers continue to offer support with critical medical appointments, grocery and food pantry pickups, as well as a ramping up of their friendly caller program. With an increased number of people working from home and looking for ways to give back, they have recruited and on-boarded some new volunteers, who they expect to hang around long after the crisis passes.
