Happy Holidays from NV Rides

As 2019 winds down, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on the impact we have had collectively on the people most in need of our services. In total, our network partners’ 442 drivers covered 110,185 miles to give 11,500 rides to 760 clients in 2019.

As you can see, volunteer drivers make a difference in Northern Virginia.

To all our volunteer drivers, you do valuable work. You allow seniors to continue living in their own homes and communities as they age. Allowing older adults to age in place increases their personal dignity and functional independence. Thank you for providing the older adults in your neighborhood with rides and companionship. Thank you for your compassion and dedication.

And now, drumroll, on to 2020. We have a suggestion (or a plea) for a New Year’s Resolution: Invite a friend to become a volunteer driver. Each of our partner organizations is in constant need of more volunteers. Help us spread the news about the important role a volunteer driver has in helping the older adults in Northern Virginia. And again, thank you for all that you do.

We hope you all have a happy and healthy 2020!

Sincerely,
The NV Rides Team

NV Rides in the News

WAMU transportation reporter Jordan Pascale spent an afternoon with volunteer driver Mark O'Connor and Shepherd's Center of McLean-Arlington-Falls Church client Janice Palmer. The piece highlights the growing challenge that seniors face when they wish to safely age in place. As the population continues to age, the need for assistance with transportation is only growing. This story features the important role that volunteer drivers play for those in the community who do not have very many affordable options.

Reporter Larry Lipman of AARP-Virginia rode along with Betty Douglass and Maya Huber of the Shepherd’s Center of McLean-Arlington-Falls Church earlier this month. These articles vividly capture the essence of volunteer driving, and highlight the caring and compassionate nature of our work. The fourteen network partners of NV Rides work very hard day every day to help seniors in their community safely travel to and from appointments. Click here to read more.
